Title: The Vampire Diaries S8.E01 “Hello, Brother”
Released: 2016

A few weeks ago we compiled a post of previous season recaps for our favorite CW shows, and here’s what I had to say about The Salvatore Crew:

  • Damon broke The Hunter’s Curse, freeing Bonnie from wanting to kill vampires, including her beloved Enzo.
  • Alaric finally accepted that Caroline is not in love with him. He was a total gentleman about it, reassuring her that the pair of them and their twin girls will always be a family regardless.
  • Damon was dumb enough to be lured into The Vault by a voice that sounded like Elena’s but was actually The Great Evil tricking him. When he didn’t come out, Enzo went in to find him. Bonnie Bennett continues to have the worst luck of anyone on this show by losing her bestie AND her man AGAIN.
  • Damon and Enzo ended up NOT in The Vault anymore. They’re on the road, killing innocents and slinging them from meat hooks.

What Went Down

Our friends are still trying to track down Enzo and Damon, who are making human sacrifices to feed a Big Bad that lives in the run-off tank of a slaughterhouse. Damon has switched off his humanity, but Enzo has not, and he’s been leaving behind small clues that only Bonnie would recognize, and at great risk to himself since Big Bad can totes read his mind as well as control him. Upon hearing of a an actual dead body being found instead of the usual missing person, Bonnie and Stefan strike out (again) in the hopes of finding Damon and Enzo.

Back in Mystic Falls Caroline Forbes is working at the news station and trying to piece together a broken file of Enzo speaking to Victoria in order to learn more about their foe. Ric has taken over management of The Armory, and has several enthusiastic interns working to figure out the secrets of the Vault. Two of them, Dorian and Georgie (who totally has the hots for Ric) discover that one of the walls in the Vault is an illusion, and, along with Ric, they discover a hidden Aladdin’s cave of treasures. Ric is smart enough (and has lived in Mystic Falls long enough) to know better than to touch any of the artifacts. He’s called home by a frantic Caroline, who has had to revive/compel their almost-dead nanny, Seline. Victoria came looking for Caroline’s sort-of-magical kids, and BIT OFF HER OWN TONGUE before revealing any helpful information about The Big Bad or the Vault to Caroline. Ric comes home to a dead Victoria and tells Caroline that he needs to be closer to all of them; he wants to move back into the family home, and he wants Caroline to move in with Stefan. (It was actually a lot sweeter than I’m making it sound.)

Bonnie pieces together the clues that Enzo has left her, and it turns out that our Big Bad this season is a siren, or some derivative thereof. We meet her at the end of the episode, fully restored to her human form, so hopefully this means she can now be killed.

Holy CRAP

  • SHE BIT OFF HER OWN TONGUE. Now, did she do that consciously or is something more witchy/evil at play here?

  • Damon is still remembering moments with Elena. His humanity may be switched off but those memories are still there.

  • Nice nod to the pilot episode with Damon’s old trick of luring unsuspecting motorists out of their cars.

  • What’s up with the Mystery Cave? And why isn’t there a ghostly knight defending it? And who’s the skeleton?

Vamp of the Week: Enzo St. John

For being an incurable romantic, even if that means he used guitar strings to murder an innocent girl. It’s ironic, but he’s trying to hold on to his humanity, and that’s pretty commendable.

Hero Hair/Nefarious Grin

Hero Hair: He’ll never give up on Damon, y’all. And he was perfect when Caroline told him she wanted to move in together.

Hero Hair, part 2: Because Bonnie’s heart is broken, but she’s there for Stefan and helps keep his faith alive.

Nefarious Grin: Honestly, I wanted to give it to the creepy, pretentious murder artist that the boys snatch for the Big Bad but I couldn’t find a pic of him. I COULD give it to the siren (IMDB informs me that her name is Sybil), but the only pics have her covered in the blood of her victims, sooooo here’s Damon instead!

Sound Bites

Enzo: Wanna watch some TV?
Damon: Nah, I was just going to read for a little while.
Enzo: Alright. Night then.

Stefan: Please don’t give up.
Bonnie: Of course. But please don’t ask me to have hope. Hope hurts, and I don’t want to hurt anymore.

Damon: Stefan. Hello, brother.

Burning Questions

  • Will Ric end his Chaste Dad phase and finally let Georgie hit that?

  • What part will Lizzie and Josie play in this season’s arc?

  • Can Damon be brought back SANS Elena? I certainly hope so.

  • Do we really think that Damon is enjoying 50 Shades of Grey??

It’s the final season of our favorite show and I’m here for ALL of your theories! Let’s dish in the comments!
