The 4 main characters, dressed in black, look like badass witches

About:

Title: Witches of East End (Seasons #1-2)
Released: 2013

Fix: Witches, Mysterious Loner Dudes, Love Triangles, Norse Mythology, Pure Camp
Platforms: Hulu

Official Summary:

Besides being an artist and the mother of two daughters, Joanna Beauchamp harbors an identity she hides from the world: that of a centuries-old witch.

FYA Summary:

Joanna Beauchamp is cursed to live forever while her two beloved daughters, Freya and Ingrid, are cursed to die on the same day – and immediately end up reborn. (Basically, Joanna spends a good chunk of her life pregnant, which is my newest nightmare.) Joanna’s sister Wendy is a shapeshifter (cat) who has a few more than nine lives.

Daughter Freya is the wild child, torn between her fiancé Dash and his mysterious loner brother Killian. Ingrid, her older sister, is the responsible, bookish one. Neither of them dream that their mother has been keeping their witchy powers secret their entire (current) lives.

This series is based on the books of the same title by Melissa de la Cruz.

Familiar Faces:

Julia Ormond as Joanna

Madchen Amick as Wendy

I admit that I tuned into this show specifically because I love Madchen Amick, particularly as Shelley on Twin Peaks. She is the highlight of the show for me.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum as Freya

Charming Potato’s (now ex-)wife is so incredibly pretty, and pulls off Freya’s flighty, impulsive character well.

There are some other familiar cameos in there, too – but I don’t want to spoil them! Rest assured that even knowing about one in particular, it took me an entire episode to realize holy crap, that’s who that is.

Couch-Sharing Capability: Good

The sheer level of camp in this show makes it giggle fodder – the storyline is compelling, but the CGI can be terribad. Add in a Very Dramatic love triangle, occasionally silly dialogue, and some cheeky comments from the elder witches, and you have a good series to watch with your bestie. If you’re looking for something that’s not too serious, this is the show for you.

Recommended Level of Inebriation: Definitely Recommended

As much fun as this show is, it requires either the suspension of belief or a stiff drink. No one would judge you if you had both, and a lot of them.

Use of Your Streaming Subscription: Good Witchy Watchin’

I mainlined the first season (the first is available on Netflix, the second is in progress on the Lifetime network) within two days, so I think that says a lot about how compelling it is despite the camp. I love that the show seems to have a good sense of humor regarding all the supernatural happenings, and even when it’s silly it still manages to…I can’t resist…charm me.
