FYA Recommends One More Way For You To Waste Time

by Megan no h on January 27, 2012

I bet I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking you’re damn glad it’s Friday. Okay, fine, that was a given. But do you know what else you’re thinking? You’re thinking that between this blog, other blogs, news outlets, youtube and all of your social networks…that you just don’t have enough to do on the internet. So I’m here to provide you with one more additional time sink. That’s right…it’s time to play Pinterest.

So what is Pinterest you ask? It’s a photo sharing site that is a bit like a tumblr collage. And in the last couple of months its become one of the most popular (and fasted growing) sites on the nets.

So how does it work? First you create boards. Boards are a blank space to which you can pin photos or videos from anywhere on the internet. Most boards have some sort of unifying theme, like fashion or food or animals or travel.

Then anytime you see a photo or video you’d like added to one of your boards, you pin it with a button that you add to your browser toolbar. If you like someone else’s pin, you can re-pin it. And similar to Twitter, people can follow you or you can follow them and see when they’ve pinned something new.

And that’s it. No, really, that’s it. There’s really not much to it. Some people find practical uses for their boards – like wedding planning, room redecorating or wish lists. Others, like me, use it for completely superfluous reasons like making a board composed entirely of creepy vintage drawings of cats. No, wait, that’s actually just me.

Because we love you all (or were bored – definitely one of those two), Forever Young Adult made its own Pinterest account this week. Some of our boards are practical, like a quick visual guide to tv shows or books we love and think you should too. Others are just eye pornography filled with delicious desserts or tasty drinks. And some we wish were straight up pornography, but that’s probably against the terms of service and besides, I’m 99% sure Taylor Kitsch hasn’t done porn. That 1% of doubt probably means it’s worth investigating.

So yes, we made a board comprised entirely of sexy photos of Taylor Kitsch. We know you could just google image search him yourself, but sometimes google likes to show you things that aren’t Taylor or (even worse) photos of Taylor who may or may not be underage and has terrible blonde helmet hair. Really, I think this last paragraph stands as my thesis as to why Pinterest really matters.

If you’re already on Pinterest, you can follow FYA here. If you don’t have account and would like one, you can request an invite from their main page. Or leave us a comment and we can send you an invite (just make sure to put your email in the email field of the comment form). And sound off in the comments with ideas of boards you’d be interested in seeing FYA make!

Love this – especially the captions on the Taylor Kitsch board! I’ll definitely be following.

Just… don’t sign up with facebook, unless you are prepared to have it follow EVERYONE you are friends with on facebook with a pinterest account, EVEN THE PEOPLE YOU DON’T ACTUALLY LIKE. I learned this the hard way. Now I am automatically following like 75 people instead of like, the 4 I wanted to follow, and worse still, many of them are following me back.

Amy January 27, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I have the same problem. I’m only following the people I want to, but I’ll randomly have people start following me– people I haven’t talked to in years and really could care less about but haven’t gotten around to deleting them as my facebook friends. I guess they assume I will follow them back so they can have a massive following?

Other than that I really like it. I started following FYA when you guys created your account. And I will probably repin every required reading pic soon. As long as that doesn’t make me a total creeper…

I’m having the same problem. And the sad thing is I’m totally boring to follow. I feel bad for the people who follow me just because we’re connected through Facebook. I must be such a letdown. I just like to waste tons of hours looking at pictures of weddings and cookies and over the top parties that people throw. I haven’t even made boards yet. Pinterest is a black hole of time suckage–but I love it.

Tammy, looking at pictures of cookies is one of the BEST WAYS TO SPEND YR TIME. So, no, you are not boring.

OH man. I already waste WAY too much time on the internet. We are talking like six hours a day several days a week sometimes…I can seriously spend my entire work time on the internet (like now for example…it’s almost one, I’ve printed out a couple graphs and that’s it…I’m a grad student).

And the dessert board…evil evil creation for some of us on a certain time of the month. Made me drool.

Okay I just saw on the TV board the fact that y’all have pinned X-Files?! WHO DID THIS. I don’t remember this ever! Why am I freaking out? (Mulder + Scully 4 Eva!!!)

*starts belting “David Duchovny, why won’t you love me” at the top of her lungs*

I LOVE THAT SONG. I remember talking about that song in college and some asshole 1. wouldn’t believe that it was real and 2. when I insisted it was, tried to convince me it must have only existed in Minnesota (what?!) as though Minnesota constantly had bizarre pop culture references confined within our borders. UHH.

I pinned it, but Erin’s the most die hard X-files fan of us all. She may or may not have inappropriate feelings toward Scully. You’ll have to ask her.

Pinterest: everything that is good and a little that is bad about the interwebs. I learned you can make tacos in a cupcake tin, how to make fab art with crayons and a blowdryer, and many great uses for vinegar all on one page! Warning: lots of cupcakes and wedding ideas
Good stuff: I learned how to make pinot grigiot slushies and what looks to be delicious effervescent wine jello shots…perhaps from champagne?
