HAPPY MOCKINGJAY EVE! that’s right — this time tomorrow, many of us will be finishing up mockingjay, bleary eyed from lack of sleep and feeling the onset of the shakes from a wicked case of TEABS. here at FYA HQ, we’ve been spazzing out about the release party going down in austin, and are almost as excited about the party as we are about the book (almost). not only will it give us the chance to do some hunger-games-related awesomeness, it’ll give us the chance to meet a whole bunch of y’all in REAL LIFE. OMG!
check out the caf for info on release parties in your area, and read on to see how to get a great party going. too late to plan a release party? have a TEABS party instead! it’ll give you an excuse to drown yr sorrows with any one of our HG cocktails (ha, like you need one!) — or at least make sure you don’t drink alone — until you’re recovered enough for a rebound book.
we tapped our collective talents and consulted our inner young adults to find out what could make this the most awesome party ever, and came up with these events.
peeta’s bakery cupcake decorating
practice your camouflage skills and carb up before the games with cupcake decorating! just a warning — come early because erin’s super-yummy coconut-vanilla and chocolate-guinness cupcakes may not actually make it past my greedy little hands to the decorating table!
cinna’s screenprinting studio
bring a t-shirt, bag, blanket, cat — whatever you want to permanently mark with hunger games imagery to the screenprinting studio! don’t worry, we’ve done the major work already. we’ll have mockingjays big and small, some select team slogans and a bonus president snow propaganda poster for you to print on everything you own.
and finally, the piece de resistance (except for getting the books, natch):

that’s right, we’ll be having our OWN battle royale with nerf weapons (check out posh’s shopping cart!). so not quite to the death, but maybe to the pain? 24 will enter, and only 1 will remain. DISTRICT 12 REPRESENT!

i’d like to point out a few things:
1) there are a few other cornucopias happening, but do any of them contain champ cans? NO.
2) i cannot believe bookpeople didn’t mention our talegate party. I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS BOOKPEOPLE. WTF. don’t even TRY to sit with me at lunch today.
3) regarding the “school night” problem: “And some stores are side-stepping the issue entirely and are pitching their parties to adults, i.e. those old enough to drink.” DAMN STRAIGHT.

I wish I didn’t have a real life, cause I am having to FIGHT MYSELF to not get in the car & drive the 9 hours to Austin. Liquor cabinet purged & nerf weapons loaded for battle of course
UGH! I so wish I could be there! None of the stores in my area are even going to be open at midnight, so when you all have already finished MJ I probably won’t even have mine yet. I may need to mix up some cocktails and fat out on cupcakes just to survive until 9 am when my bookstore opens (although when I preordered they mysteriously said they would email me when my copy was ready…so maybe not even at 9?!)

OK, I couldn’t fall asleep last night because I was so excited about Mockingjay. There are NO release parties in my area (WTF, Greater Tampa Bay Area? We will have WORDS about this, you and I.) So I’m going to download the damn thing at the stroke of midnight and power through it until it’s time to go to work. And then possibly call in sick due to physical and emotional exhaustion.

Ohhhhhh that review gave me chills. Can’t wait. There are no Mockingjay parties near me and worse…I volunteered to help in my daughter’s classroom (that part isn’t bad, of course) and the ONE DAY I’m scheduled on the Sept/Oct calendar is 8/24.

Best midnight release party EVER! Seriously guys, Harry Potter magic tricks ain’t got nothin’ on you guys. We have to do this again, even if the books are over Austin needs an annual Hunger Games of it’s own. Like Eeyore’s birthday…. Only bloodier.
I live in Australia, and it’s not released ’til the 25th here. Which I thought meant delivery on the 23-24th, then strict embargo until 9am 25th. It’s Scholastic, they do 39 Clues, they’re used to this embargo stuff.
Except, as of 5:30 tonight, when the bookstore where I work closed for the night, the boxes of Mockingjay (which I MUST HAVE, NOW PLEASE) had still not been delivered. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
If they’re not delivered before my lunch break tomorrow, I will seriously kill someone. Probably a Scholastic employee.
