BOOK REPORT for the truth about forever by sarah dessen

bff charm: yay!
swoonworthy scale: 8
talky talk: straight up dessen
bonus factors: wes, bert, monotone, tasty business, as seen on TV, eff you, gotcha!
relationship status: eternal love

yeah, i used the UK cover cos IT’S SO MUCH BETTER than the oxygen channel shizz on the american version.

the deal:

ladies and gentlemen (er, brian), the time has finally come for FYA to review a book from the canon of one of YA’s most beloved and talented writers– the one, the only, THE AMAZING SARAH DESSEN. i’m not even kidding when i say that i am truly honored to spazz with you about this book, because it is seriously my favorite one in her entire collection and considering that i want to marry all of her books this is like, THE HOLIEST OF THE HOLIES. i will try my damnedest to give “the truth about forever” the review it deserves, because every single girl in the world will not be living a complete life until THEY PICK UP THIS MASTERPIECE OF LITERATURE AND EXPERIENCE ITS AWESOME POWER.

SO!

ever since her father died of a heart attack right in front of her, macy queen has been trying her hardest to be fine. not just fine, actually, but perfect, because perfect means being in control, and being in control means nothing like that will ever happen again. she volunteers on a regular basis, dates the high school valedictorian and combs the part in her hair until it’s straight as an arrow, just like her life. everything is going according to plan until the day her boyfriend, jason, emails from brain camp to say that it’s obvs in their best interest as a couple to take a break [spoiler alert: JASON IS A TOOL]. with her ice queen composure suddenly shaken, macy finds herself drawn to the chaos of wish catering, a company that recently worked at one of her mother’s realty events. in spite of her safety pants nature, she begins working at wish and spending time with its menagerie of employees, all of whom encourage her to LIVE A LITTLE SHEESH. soon, macy finds herself opening up to the world– to life, to grief and, most fearfully, to wes, the (SUPER SEXY) artist with a tragic past of his own.

bff charm: yay!

it’s impossible NOT to love all of dessen’s heroines, because they all seem to be regular girls, ordinary but far from boring, conflicted but never weak. i wanted to be besties with macy from the get-go, although my motives for friendship shift as the story develops. when girlfriend is all sweater-setting it up, i want to ruffle up the part in her hair, give her a double vodka soda and take her out dancing at a gay club so we can LET LOOSE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. but as she begins to finally deal with her grief over the loss of her dad (LU COACH JOE), my heart aches for her, and i wish i could crawl into the book and put my arm around her and let her cry and then we could try to make s’mores in her microwave and of course they would tragically explode which would make me laaaugh and then macy might get mad about the mess cos she’s anal like that but I WOULD LOVE HER ANYWAY.

fortunately for macy, she actually gets a bestie that does ALL of the things i want to do, which can i point out is kinda rare in YA these days?!! what’s up with all of these supposed bffs that suck? anyhoo, because sarah dessen is a PRO, she doesn’t pull crap like that, and kristy, macy’s new friend at wish, is the SASSIEST, MOST KICKASS BEST FRIEND EVER. the girl has huge scars on her face from a car accident and SHE DOESN’T GIVE A SHIZZ. she rocks the fashion like claudia kishi, dreams about meeting an “extraordinary” boy and, most importantly, tells it like it is. in fact, i’m about to give kristy one of the greatest compliments i have EVER laid on a fictional character. are you guys ready? ok… she reminds me of… a teenage… DOLLY PARTON. well, minus the twang, which i know kind of defeats the purpose but if you love dolly, you get what i’m saying.

not only does kristy encourage macy to tear down the walls she’s so carefully built, she also does the one thing i could probably never, ever, EVER do: she doesn’t get all bitchy about macy’s growing interest in wes, even though kristy knew wes first. in other words, she’s practically jesus.

swoonworthy scale: 8

as you may recall, wes and macy made my top ten swoonworthy YA couples list, so you know that i am NOT KIDDING AROUND WITH THIS HIGH SCORE. what’s really impressive here is that dessen doesn’t use a lot of physical action– in fact, she rarely does in any of her books, because she is THAT skilled at building an insane amount of chemistry through conversations and situations that feel like they could happen to any of us. what makes this book so swoonworthy is that everything between wes and macy seems, well, natural. sure, there’s a few gloriously dramatic moments, but for the most part, their relationship grows in an incredibly authentic way, which makes it all the more smoldering because it feels REAL. macy and wes aren’t clichés; they’re developed, they’re compelling, and because i care so deeply about them, it makes it that much more urgent that they GET TOGETHER ALREADY COME THE EFF ON.

nowhere is the swoon more sizzling than when macy and wes are playing the question game… that is, except for that scene when she asks him what it feels like to have all of the girls staring at him and OK I’LL SHUT UP NOW BUT OMG.

more on wes on the bonus factor section. because i can’t help myself.

talky talk: straight up dessen

why yes, this IS the sarah dessen love parade! have some beads! no need to take yr top off, kthx!

in my mind, sarah dessen basically INVENTED the straight up talky talk, so i’m choosing to honor her today by adding her name to the term. dessen’s dialogue is incredibly believable, her descriptions spot on without being too flowery. she’s always got a firm grasp on pacing, not to mention a way of writing characters so charming that i would hang out 24/7 at the quick zip just to try to swimfan meet them. check out this excerpt from macy’s head, when she asks wes about the tattoo on his arm:

* * *
“So what is that?” I asked him, forcing the words out, then immediately realized I was looking at him, not his arm, so this question could concern just about anything. He raised his eyebrows, confused, and I added– face flushing, God help me– “your tattoo, I mean. I’ve never been able to see what it is.”

This full sentence, an inquiry to boot, seemed to me on par with Helen Keller finally singing W-A-T-E-R. I mean, really.
* * *

and THAT is how straight up is done. BOOM!!!!

bonus factor: wes

OH WES. i can’t say yr name without sighing and placing a hand on my… STERNUM, PEOPLE. GAH. don’t be pervy!

now, i’ve reviewed a couple of other books featuring my future YA husbands, but wes gets to be his own bonus factor because HE IS PERFECT. he’s a reformed bad boy! he takes care of his little brother! he’s creates amazing sculptures from scrap metal! he drives a truck! he’s smart! he’s ridiculously good looking! and, most important of all, HE HATES THE SMELL OF PATCHOULI.

as kristy likes to say: “SA-WOON!”

bonus factor: bert

ok i realize that i’m kinda breaking the rules by making characters bonus factors but HAVE YOU MET BERT? if so, then you know that there’s not a single YA character like him and he’s a total weirdo and I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. he’s totally awkward and wears way too much cologne and his favorite activity is attending Armageddon club meetings and SEE WHAT I MEAN?

bonus factor: monotone

ok, ok, i swear this is the last character bonus factor. but monica, aka monotone, really does deserve it. she’s kristy’s sister, and she’s pretty much her antithesis as well– kristy babbles, monica says two words (and slurs them together because it’s easier); kristy is a sparkling ball of energy, monica takes ten minutes to cross a room. obvs you can guess why they call her monotone. she’s harder to explain than, say, bert, but there’s something about monotone that just makes her endure in my heart. occasionally, i’ll use her trademark “donneven,” and even though no one else realizes i’m quoting her, it still makes me smile, like i’m sharing a private joke not only with her, but with the entire wish catering crew. BETTAQUIT!

bonus factor: tasty business

Y’ALL THEY WORK FOR A CATERING COMPANY. HELLO DREAM JOB. this book is full of meatballs and crab cakes and pastry puffs and the only unrealistic thing about the entire story is the fact that macy doesn’t gain five pounds.

bonus factor: as seen on tv

let’s just say that if you like informercials, you’re in luck.

bonus factor: eff you

i’m a huge fan of what i like to call “eff you” scenes, like when julia roberts is all “big mistake. HUGE.” to that snobby saleswoman in “pretty woman.” well, i’m not gonna spoil the details, but this book has one of the best eff you moments EVERRRRRR. when you read it, SO MUCH FIST PUMPING WILL OCCUR. for those of you who have read the book, i’m talking about the thing… in the library… yeah. HELLS YEAH.

bonus factor: gotcha!

ok, ok, last one, i promise. so wes and bert play this game… well, i don’t want to spoil that for you, either. but it adds such a funny, goofy touch to the book, and every time it happens, i totally crack up (not to mention fall more deeply in love with wes and bert).

casting call:

well, you already saw my choice for wes:

taylor kitsch as wes

look, i know i need to cut back on the riggs. I KNOW. but sarah dessen is actually a huge FNL fan and even though she wrote this book before the show started, i’d like to think she pictures wes as #33 too.

jonah hill is obvs too old to play burt now, but that’s always how i picture him– maybe a little less rotund, but definitely with that cutely clueless determination and complete lack of self-awareness. as for monotone, i just did a search for “long bangs” to find that picture, because i have no idea who could tackle the stoner-ish, slow-as-molasses monica.

moving on to kristy…

portia doubleday as kristy

trust me, if i could go back and cast a young dolly parton, I WOULD. but since i can’t, i think portia will do.

as for macy, let’s be honest. it’s mandy moore, all the way (pro-secret: i actually picture her as every sarah dessen heroine). BUT since i guess she’s a tad old at this point, i’ll go with… hmm… ok, i’ll pick… how about…

SIGH. i just literally spent half an hour trying to find the perfect person to play macy and NO ONE COMPARES TO MANDY. so CUSS IT. mandy is macy, END OF DISCUSSION.

mandy moore as macy

relationship status: eternal love

this review is already longer than most marriage ceremonies, so i think i’ve made it pretty clear that this book and i are TOGETHER 4-EVER. i cherish every page, i adore every word, and i promise to have and to hold this book for as long as we both shall live– AND THEN SOME. every summer, i make a point to re-read it, because i never want to be too far from these characters and the magical summer when their lives came together. and whenever i open it, i feel a wave of comfort and a tantalizing spark of swoon spread over me, because even after all of these years, this book and i are still very, very much in love.*

*note that i used “very” instead of the usual “v.” THAT’S HOW MUCH I MEAN IT.

Finally some Sarah Dessen!!! I agree with your bonus factors, this book makes it hard to pick your favorite one. I love all the moments between Wes and Macy, but my favorite has to be the one where he goes to the library to ask her a question and she totally quits so badass-ly on those stuck up girls,I was like whooo!!!Sarah Dessen makes you want to be friends with her protagonists,I was also like GET WITH WES omg JASON SUX!!

Dammit. I am purchasing too many books these days. Buy, buy, buy. Damn you online shopping and the way you make my money seem like just another number on the screen! But I HAD TO buy this book after this review. Though I wasn’t that impressed by Sarah Dessen’s “This Lullaby” when I read it two years ago. But it’s time to give the author another chance, and what better way than with this book when it comes so highly recommended.

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 5, 2010 at 4:03 pm

well, i actually love “this lullaby” too (it’s my second favorite dessen) BUT the books are definitely different, so hopefully you’ll enjoy this one. if you don’t… i might cry. JUST SAYING.

Reply

Sidsel August 5, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Haha! We can’t have that. Really, based on the review I think I’ll enjoy it. From what I can remember of “This Lullaby” I really liked the characters, my only problem was that there didn’t seem to be happening all that much up until the last 75 pages. But maybe I would enjoy more if I read it today.

Loved this one, can’t believe it took me so long to find Sarah and now that I have I’m devouring all her books faster than a tribute on a bread basket! This book has tons of great “you go girl” moments, definitely one of my favs, but I think I like Just Listen a tiny bit more.

Meghan August 5, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Um I probably shouldn’t admit this cos it could get me fire from FYA but … shhh … I’ve never read Sarah dessen. I KNOW and I’M SORRY. I’ll fix it immediately. Pinky swear.

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 8:07 am

MEGHAN. WHAT.

actually, i don’t think any y’all (meghan, jenny & erin) have read this one. OBVS I KNOW WHAT I’M GETTING YOU FOR XMAS.

So what you’re saying is . . . you like this book?

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 8:07 am

and what you’re saying is… you’re crazy for not having read it?

Reply

Erin August 6, 2010 at 8:20 am

Pretty much!!

Worse, I used to HAVE this book. But I loaned, like, 20 books to my cousin, trying to get her interested in something other than Twilight, and some were ones I hadn’t even read yet! (srsly, she has: the first two Princess Diaries book, Sweethearts, A Great and Terrible Beauty, King Dork and untold others) And she hasn’t given them back yet.

:( Woe.

Good God. Taylor Kitsch as Wes makes me want to get my book and re-read it stat.

I am so totally freaking out right now. Yes, I am THAT excited about this review. First off, I have to thank you for mentioning Wes and Macy in your list of the Most Swoonworthy Couples of All Time because had I not read that I may never have read The Truth About Forever (until this FABtastic review). And you know how you hear how great a book is and you read it and are like, “Um, yeah it was good, I guess…” but it never lives up to the way it was hyped? That is NOT how this book was. I loved it in a crazy, insane (admittedly swimfan) sort of way. And while I like Sarah Dessen, this is by far my favorite of her stories. It’s impossible not to love each of the characters (minus douchebag Jason). And her writing style–oh her writing style. Is it possible to crush on that? It’s seems so easy and effortless without being flowery or forced. Lastly, I must say what a rip-roaring crush I have on Wes. He is second only to Michael Moscovitz for me (and if any of you have read my posts on how much I love me some Michael then you know this is a huge compliment in my book). Thank you for such a great, great, perfect review. You did a great job Posh!

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 8:10 am

tammy, thank YOU!!! it’s super gratifying to know that i managed to do this book justice, and i love knowing there are other readers out there who swimfan over this book as much as i do.

um and yeah it is totally ok to crush on her writing style. sarah dessen makes it look SO EASY. and did you know she has a TODDLER?! i can’t even do my laundry in a timely fashion, let alone write a book that CHANGES LIVES.

Tammy August 6, 2010 at 2:05 pm

1. I have read this, on account of the several mentions in the Swoonworthy Couples post!
2. I really liked it!
3. Which other Dessen books would you recommend?

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 8:19 am

rebecca, i actually really do love all of her books but my next favorite is “this lullaby.” after that, i’d recommend “just listen” and “keeping the moon.” “dreamland” is amazing but incredibly dark, just FYI.

Reply

Tina August 5, 2010 at 6:02 pm

My favorite favorite favorite Dessen book! I loved it from the first time I read it, and I agree with everything you wrote here 100%! Wes is my number one YA crush, and I can never get enough of their conversations in this book. :D

this is basically my favorite review eveeeer. this is my favorite Dessen too, which of course means it is basically one of my favorites period.

I love Love LOVE that you used the phrase “rocks the fashion like Claudia Kishi.”

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 8:20 am

allison, you know i would never use that phrase lightly but when it comes to kristy, IT’S TRUE. any girl who has a different “fashion theme” every day deserves a place in the kishi hall of fame.

I think it’s one of my favorite Dessen books. She’s awesome. And YAY some Bert-love. I love both Monica and Kristi.

Aww, now I want to go read it too!!! it’s right next to my bed *sneaks a glance at book* ^
*stares longingly*

Um. LOL. I love this. I agree with anything but couldn’t have said it that way myself. There IS something that’s so subtly gorgeous about Sarah’s stories! And Wes IS the perfect guy, etc etc reiteration of all that you just said. I always find myself using “sa-woon” in real life now. lol. As of now, maybe one or two people who’ve been near me when I’ve used it know where it came from. This Lullaby will always be my #1 Dessen, but The Truth About Forever is solidly #2!

i was planning on reading the truth about forever after i read dessen’s along for the ride. i guess i will be switching that order now. i want to love wes too.

My two favorite Dessen Boys: Dexter (On top of them all) and Wes because not only he is a reformed bad guy, a sweet clever handsome guy, most importantly he is an ARTIST.
Macy is also a great female character but I could not picture Mandy Moore, I associate Moore with christian fiction (I now she was only acting …), I would choose someone like Kat Dennings

Reply

Poshdeluxe August 6, 2010 at 12:12 pm

i love me some kat dennings! but there’s something about mandy moore that, for me, captures the reticence of macy.

of course, if hollywood wanted to make this movie and cast kat dennings, i wouldn’t say no. and if they wanted to throw in taylor kitsch, i would say YES PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Carla August 6, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Y’know, I only read my first Sarah Dessen this year. I know, I KNOW. This Lullaby will always be my favourite Dessen though, because I love Remy. But….WES may just be my favourite Dessen boy. And guess what?! That cover is even GORGEOUSER in person. Your making me want to send it to you to see if I can hear your squeals from here in the UK.

and you know whats a shame? Dessen isn’t as big here in the UK as she is in the US. Which all I can say to that is British people (obvs not including myself) are cute and have good accents but they are stupid for not realising Dessen is a GOD.

Diana August 7, 2010 at 1:30 am

The fact that you think Taylor Kitsch should play Wes has me very interested about this character and book (love Friday Night Lights). I have Along for the Ride and This Lullaby (both of which I haven’t read yet), so I may have to add The Truth About Forever to my collection and actually read a Sarah Dessen book. I do enjoy reading her blog and tweets, though. :)

I love Sarah Dessen SO MUCH, you don’t even KNOW. She’s the main reason I started reading YA, and why I want to write it.

“This Lullaby” is my favorite of hers, but this is definitely a strong second. Macy’s an amazing character, and Wes is a total dream boat. Le sigh.

Sorry, I’m going to have to reopen the Macy discussion. Not Mandy Moore. I imagined Macy as more of a young Betty Draper, because Wes described her as a cool blonde. Selah.

And my fav part of this book (besides Wes) was the hole in the driveway and Delia’s description of it. Deep.

We are SO in a fight right now. I can’t believe, after knowing that I’m still fragile after Mockingjay, that you’d recommend this without a warning? I started it at bedtime last night, thinking I’d read a couple chapters. UM NO. I was up til 2am wallowing in the pure perfection of Wed, Macy, and Kristy. I finished the whole damn thing! Then I stayed awake thinking about how I want to be best friends with all of them, and why did I not know about Sarah Dessen before, and holy crap Wes is effin hot. I see exactly what you mean about the beauty of Dessen’s writing style. I had to restrain myself from buying all of her books on my nook last night. But seriously, why no warning? This may be a worse case of TEABS than mockingjay! (I’m kidding, totally kidding, but I’m 100% prime time in love with this book.)

And I totally pictured Kristy and Monica as Asian, because Kristy *IS* Claudia! I was so excited to see that sentence in your review because Claudia is the best friend I’ve always wanted, and seriously, girl can dress. For realz. Anyway, so my pick for Kristy is Brenda Song. Case in Point: http://aatheory.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/3439_brenda-song.jpg

Also no way on Mandy Moore. She’s too Nicholas Sparks for this book – whiny and cliche and blah. I more see Emma Watson as Macy. Blond, kinda adorable, but also totally strong.

DUDE. ROSEY. DONNEVEN. i can’t believe you weren’t waiting for me at my locker this morning JUST BECAUSE i was awesome enough to share sarah dessen with you. and then you went and INSULTED MY GIRL MANDY?!!!!

i suggest you skip calc next period so you can get another dessen fix to help you SIMMER DOWN. then we can make up at lunch and dish about wes.

Reply

Rosey September 2, 2010 at 9:02 am

Whatever, I’m totally skipping lunch to read Sweethearts. You can go sit with your BFF Mandy and be all junior high together. But if Sara Zarr is as good as you said, I’ll wait for you after school and we can walk to cross country practice together. Because seriously? Rosey + Wes 4ever. The guys at this school are so ORDINARY!

Reply

Poshdeluxe September 2, 2010 at 9:12 am

oh man, you’re starting sweethearts?!! you’re gonna hate me all over again. guess we’ll have to wait til prom to make up cos after that WE MAY NEVER SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN OMG GRADUATION IS SO INTENSE.

Reply

Rosey September 2, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Um, shut up about graduation because OMG my heart is BROKEN right now! I’m going to have to go home early from work because all I can do is relentlessly google Sweethearts until you guys write a book report.

Seriously. Skip last period and meet me in the upstairs bathroom because I need a hug from my best friend. (Or my husband, but he totally won’t understand why I cry when I hug him tonight.) WRECKED.

oh Posh, I am so your YA bitch now, I’ll read whatever you tell me to. I loved this book like people love meatballs. As if the awesomeness of Macy and Wes weren’t enough (and it TOTALLY is) the relationship between Macy and her mom was so well written and heartbreaking. Reading some of those scenes was almost painful they were so real and I like that the breakthrough (for both of them) came kind of gradually and naturally. As for Macy and Wes, I loved the construct of the Truth game. My big beef with rom-coms/romance novels etc, is the whole “I met you 3 days ago and know absolutely nothing about you but I Love You!” The game let them find out more about each other and it made them falling in love so much more relatable. To be fair, I think falling in love at first sight with Wes is totally justifiable too :) There were some points where they were hanging out and I was practically shouting Kiss her/him!!!!! because chemistry like that with no smooching? danielle, i think this calls for a GOTCHA!!!! so glad my review led you to the light of sarah dessen. if you haven’t read any of her other books, i highly recommend “this lullaby” as yr next stop.

and i agree, the lack of kissing was almost too much to bear. esp. in that once scene where macy’s all “how does it feel to have girls staring at you?” and wes is all, “how does it feel to be the gorgeous, untouchable girl?” and i’m all BETTAQUIT BEFORE I EXPLODE FROM THE HOTNESS.

Okay, I had to comment. I’m new to this whole Book Review Blog thinger, especially your blog but I have to say, I freaking love it. Yr in my favorites bar. I JUST THIS SECOND finished this book because I saw it was yr faves Dessen, who I’ve never read (Donneven. I know, it’s tragical). I am now dying because it’s over. OVER. But thank you for giving me a book that makes my heart ache after I’ve read the last page. Ahhh, I need more. MOREMOREMORE.

even though sarah dessen’s books pretty much sell themselves, i have to say that this review is one of my favorite patches on my YAngelist vest.

did i just compare Yangelism to girl scouts? yes i did. hello there are SO MANY SIMILARITIES. starting with COOKIES. cookies are v. v. important to both causes.

OMG I love this book. I just finished it and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your review! I stumbled upon FYA two days ago and yesterday when I read this review, I just had to read this book. This is my first Sarah Dessen and even though I’ve heard of her before, I never picked her books up. Now I’m left sa-wooning over Wes and thinking about Sarah’s messages in this book.

My dad passed away when I was younger and like Macy, for whatever reason, I’ve been striving for perfection. Thank you so much for leading me to this book. Reading it has opened my eyes to things in my life that can change for the better.

I was reading an interview with one of the gals on here and she mentioned this book, so I read it and I LOVED IT. SA-WOON. So much fist-pumping and wonderful Macy/Wes moments…ah, Wes…… Also, this was my first Dessen and I def see the appeal now. Fantastic writing! I need to read more from her now!

OK, I realize my comment is several months late, but this was one of my first Dessen novels. Monica stuck with me more than the main characters. I just loved her. I still do.

This is one of Sarah’s best, I think. :)

This is *such* a late comment, but I have to share because I marathon-read the last quarter of this book last night, and am currentlyin a wonderful haze of Sarah Dessen love. Which is espcially noteworthy given that (and yes, I am about to admit a shameful secret) I’d never read any of her books before. And now I am prepping to buy my bookstore’s entire Sarah Dessen stock. So.

But anyway, I loved this book, so, so, so much it makes me want to stop random people on the street and recommend it to them. Macy was so real (and so much like me in highschool, omg, minus the losing a parent thing) and all the other characters were so amazing and original and gah, SO GOOD. I can’t even explain adequatly my love for these fictional people. In fact, the idea that they are fictional and not just livng in the next town where I can call them up and be all “hey guys what’s happening?” seems wrong to me. They were just that awesome.

So yeah, basically I’m now a Sarah Dessen born again fangirl, which I blame entirely on FYA. I just needed to share.

If you loved The Truth About Forever and you’re craving more Sarah Dessen (obvs having read all of her books already), then I recommend Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. It’s similar in theme and tone (quoting the School Library Journal Review) but different enough and fully enjoyable as a cross-country journey. (I picked it up because I wanted to read more road trips after relishing Don’t Stop Now by Julie Halpern.)

i LOVED the truth about forever. and since i read the description of Wes, Taylor Kitsch popped up my mind. i mean, i read the entire book imagining Taylor as Wes!
