FYA TaleGate: The ATX Mockingjay Midnight Release Party!

by Poshdeluxe on August 2, 2010

IMPORTANT PARTY UPDATE: if you RSVP on the FB event page, you get a champ can*!!! FOR REAL. YOU ARE SO LUCKY.

y’all, it is HIGH TIME for us to get together in real life and celebrate our love of YA with some actual cocktails. i mean, i’m all about toasting things on twitter and commenting it up on our site, but i want to see yr real faces, not just yr avatars! not to mention drink some real alcohol, none of this “virtual cocktail” shizz! and what greater excuse to throw our first FYA party then the RELEASE OF MOCKINGJAY!!! HOLY HAYMITCH!

we’ve been feverishly discussing it in the caf, and now we are thrilled to announce some official deets for the first in what we hope will be many, many years of FYA TaleGating (GET IT?!!).

The Deal:

first and foremost, if you actually want to get your copy at midnight, you MUST buy it ahead of time from bookpeople. you can pre-purchase it in person, over the phone or online. go here for more info. i repeat, YOU CANNOT BUY A BOOK AT MIDNIGHT. if you even try, you’ll get taken down faster than a district 10 tribute during the first minute of the games.

now that we got that serious business out of the way, here’s what you can expect:

  • FYA Hunger Games, featuring a cornucopia of Nerf weapons!
  • Cupcake Decorating, a blend of Peeta’s favorite things!
  • Spazzing Out with yr fave FYAers!
  • Swilling Cocktails (byob, y’all. no glass!)
  • Something Else Amazing we’ll probably think of at the last minute so it will a surprise! YAY!

so if you live anywhere near** austin, RSVP on our new facebook page (HELLO FREE CAN OF CHAMPERS) and prepare yr pants for some serious talegating action!

p.s. hey august 23, GET YR ASS OVER HERE.

*you gotta be 21 or over to get the camp can. OBVS. y’all we may be fabulous but we’re not above the law (yet).

**near = 1,000 mile radius, obvs. cos it will be THAT awesome.

I’M SO JEALOUS. WHY do I have no Hunger Games friends? (Or just, you know, friends? Lol.) I’m actually very distressed at hearing this. I’m still greiving about the fact that it come out a day later over here.

I wonder how cheap some flights to Austin would be…

So sad, just Googled Orange County, CA to Austin, TX and was told it was 1300 miles away. Honestly I wouldn’t have made it if it was only 30 miles away but still, this would be a book launch worth going to! I’ll be there in spirit, with spirits! :)

aw, MAN!! i am gonna be on holiday starting that day but I am NOWHERE NEAR austin, TX. In fact I am in Toronto, Canada. I am so bummed, would totally love to be there!
on a side note though, my husband and I have been wanting to visit Austin for AGES, and we’re thinking of a road trip next yr sometime. Is it totally unrealistic to try to drive from Memphis down through Louisiana (New Orleans, etc) and then end up in Austin? (disclosure: I am absolutely rubbish at geography and distances, etc etc not to mention the fact that I can’t drive so the poor husb will have to do all the driving — so I don’t know if this plan is totally pie-in-the-sky but we want to see all of those places so I thought we’d try to kill three birds with one stone)
Anyway, if we are going to be in Texas do we need to visit anywhere other than Austin? I’m thinking we’ll probably only have a week or a week-and-a-half total for the whole shebang.
ALSO, is there a best time of year to be in TX?
Sorry for all the questions, I just figure since some of you gals live there you are a good resource :)

Why did I get rid of my nerf shotgun?!?! Clearly I’m going to have to raid Toys-R-Us/WalMart beforehand.

This is too unkind…1600 miles away in NY. :(

You know whats a little closer for us New Yorkers though? Suzanne Collins, who will be doing a book signing here on the 24th. BE JEALOUS

Poshdeluxe August 10, 2010 at 8:15 am

yes, but will suzanne collins have a cornucopia of nerf weapons? I DON’T THINK SO.

she will, however, be the actual author, so let’s call it even.

I was just thinking when I read this “I bet Katniss knows eighteen different ways to kill with a nerf weapon…”

So, I literally just finished reading the “The Hunger Games,” and while I have been up for over 18 hours and with about 4 or less hours of sleep I am contemplating going out to get the second book. That said, if the second book is half as grand as the first, believe you me, I will be at the midnight release. Now, that is saying a lot as I typically am asleep around 9pm (I work rather early in the morning). I will let you know soon but I am expecting my response to be in the “Yes” column.

Just you wait until you read the last page of Catching Fire, Adam!

Reply

Adam August 13, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Ok, middle of “Catching Fire” and purchased “Mockingjay.” Laugh if you will, but as long as my wife is cool with it, I will be there with all the other tributes, eh hem, I mean, YAers and others who have purchased the book and brains can only think about its conclusion.

Okay, has anyone seen this, Hunger Games the Board game:
http://www.amazon.com/Hunger-Games-Training-Days-Strategy/dp/1935693115/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in

I have a bad feeling about this…

I went to Amazon to look at this. All I have to say, is Amazon is way to inexpensive. We all want books to be more than half off, that’s why there is a wonderful company based out of Dallas called “Half-Price Books.” My concern is that with the e-book, and the incredible discounted books found on the internet, that the local book store, used book store, and major book store will become something of the past, not to even mention libraries.

I know this has nothing to do with your comment, which is alarming and curious all the same, but this is what struck me when I visited Amazon to look at said game.

It looks like a bit of an abomination, but I still can’t help but to *really really* want it… But I am slightly paranoid about the merchandise thing. When will they learn that they take things too far??

You can’t help but picturing Peeta and Katniss, pulled out of that arena barely alive, while the announcer says ‘And you win a fabulous copy of ‘Hunger Games: the Board Game!”

(I think they used that same joke in ‘Running Man’)

If you guys want a free fix, you can play HG related games on scholastic’s website:

http://www.scholastic.com/thehungergames/games/index.htm

Prepare to fail…a lot. Then prepare to waste time there until you win.

Holly August 17, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Seriously? Ha! See y’all in about six hours…

(And I just found out that the game is not availiable in the UK. FRICK.)

Poshdeluxe August 17, 2010 at 8:43 am

i have to admit, i’ve seriously considered purchasing that game so we can play it at our upcoming FYA slumber party (the four of us will be together for the first time IN HISTORY!) and see just how bad it is. i mean, it can’t be worse than the buffy board game… CAN IT?!!

merchandising annoys me, but it’s not going away any time soon. the one thing i think i’d be ok with is a hunger games video game. i mean Y’ALL PICTURE IT.

Poshdeluxe August 17, 2010 at 8:43 am

OMG. i think i just inspired myself to do a post on faux HG merchandising. holla!
