prepare thy livers: FYABC meeting next week!

by Poshdeluxe on July 8, 2010

if you’re planning on joining us for the next book club meeting, stock up yr liquor cabinet and mark yr calendar for wednesday, july 14th!

as meghan announced previously, we’re reading life as we knew it by susan beth pfeffer. instead of spreading it over four weeks, we’ll just be meeting two times to discuss the book (july 14 and the following wednesday, july 21).

in order to prepare for next week’s meeting, please do the following:

1. read the first half of the book.

2. enjoy some cocktails.

3. try to remember yr reactions.

and yes, we realize #2 may hinder #3. this is the cross we must bear as FYA book clubbers, and i pray that all of you have the soundness of mind and strength of liver to handle it.

goldengirls_bookclub_FYA

we’re organizing the meeting into three posts based on the same topics we used for before i fall:

  • the cast (discussion of characters)
  • semantics (the plot, talky talk, bonus factors)
  • drama in real life (how does the book relate to YOU?)

so grab yr book, shake up that martini and CARRY THOSE CROSSES PEOPLE.

p.s. that can totally be our official book club photo if y’all want. it’s not really a logo per se, nor is it a badge but IT’S THE GOLDEN GIRLS. maybe we can make stickers!

maybe i’ll add our name at the top of the picture. you know, just to glorify our brand.

Yes! This is a brand-positive idea, and other words and phrases I learned while stuck in a meeting with our marketing team at work.

Poshdeluxe July 8, 2010 at 12:23 pm

BRAND POSITIVITY ACHIEVED.

Jenny July 8, 2010 at 5:00 pm

I second this idea!

Meghan July 8, 2010 at 8:33 pm

OMG I NEED THAT STICKER RIGHT NOW. i feel like rose is telling some story about how back in st. olaf they have an annual ritual like the hunger games, but where every family gives up one child to the pickled herring eating contest, and you should have been there the year sven smorgensson won … and then dorothy interrupts with a stern, “ROSE. why are you telling us this? did sven smorgensson win by killing all the other pickled herring eaters? because it’s not really like the hunger games, then, is it?”

And then Sophia will look at an eyeline that is nowhere near any of the other cast members and say a sarcastic one-liner.

I feel like I’ve seen that episode a hundred times already. I have always wanted to be Dorothy when I finally decide to grow up.

this settles it. i’m not just getting stickers, I’M MAKING T-SHIRTS.

Jill July 9, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Renee July 9, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Schuyler Esperanza July 9, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Make hoodies and LBDs, too, coz I plan on wearing this logo every day! It is THAT awesome!

I _really_ want to do the book club but I have a bit of a prioritization problem. In YA speak: OMG YOU GUYS MAJOR DILEMMA HALP.

1) I have to read as much Potter as I can before I go to POTTER WORLD in Orlando at the end of the month. Gasp, I know, I’ve never read nor seen the movies. I hope we can still be friends and that you girls don’t want to punch me in the face.

2) I’m getting a VERY MUCH ANTICIPATED book in the mail next week in which I Will Drop Everything I’m Doing to Read It.

3) Jerk, California, and The Season have been whining at me to read them for the past two weeks. I purchased them at the bookstore. They feel neglected. They have sad eyes. Did I mention they’re whining already?

4) I have to work and do stuff on the weekends and stuff.

The good thing is that LAWKI is at my library, and I can swing by and pick it up at any given moment.

DILEMMA, Y’ALL. HALP.

UM, I won’t kill you for going to Potter World if you TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!

Done. You’ll have to fit in one of my checked bags. I get two FREE for Southwest.

seriously, shabbygeek, i got 99 problems and going to HP world ain’t one. DAMMIT.

i think our book selection is a pretty fast read, so i bet you could swing it if you leave yr bookstore books alone (sorry suckas!).

p.s. YOU’VE REALLY NEVER READ HP BEFORE? i don’t want to face punch you, i want to give you a v. long hug and whisper, “i’m sorry, i’m so so sorry” into yr ear.

Crap. I was hoping you’d somehow get me out of WORKING and DOING STUFF ON WEEKENDS. Psshh.

Welp. That settles it. Off to the library after work…yay. I KNEW I could count on you girls! *fist pump*

HP! The first couple books are definitely children’s books but by time you get to 6 and 7 -OMG! Books 3, 4, and 5 are where it starts getting dark and twisty. You can do it! And WWoHP is amazing! The movies are kinda meh but the park did a good job at replicating what you seen in the movies.

*needs more HP fangirls*

Renee July 8, 2010 at 5:46 pm

*jumps on the HP fangirl bandwagon* I could gush about HP for hours, dare me not to! In fact, HP was my first foray BACK into the Wonderful World of YA. I had a classics only phase from 19-22. I think I actually finished 6 books.

lorna July 9, 2010 at 4:42 am

wow, i’m actually jealous a wee bit shabbygeek- the excitement of reading the HP books for the first time is one of my best memories ever. i have actually seen JK Rowling IN REAL LIFE on two occassions. once in the supermarket with her youngest kid in a pram, and another time coming out of a swanky department store looking so smart. i almost ran up to her, but that’d be rude. so i just squeaked and text everyone i know… looking forward to the bookclub. just need to source the book… x

Elizabeth Briggs July 8, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I have been wanting to read this forever! I will pick it up in preparation of the book club…along with some cocktails.

P.S. Love the photo.

Oh! I actually have this book. But I never enjoyed it (well, I didn’t enjoy the first two chapters, which are the only two I read)

Perhaps it’s time to dust it off and try to start again. Maybe. I dunno – maybe I didn’t like the book because my mum bought it for me, thinking “This is exactly the kind of book Holly will enjoy” and I was insulted because she didn’t get it bang-on perfect. Because she’s my mother. Dearie me.

I got LAWKI from the library and read it THREE TIMES in ONE SITTING. Then I bought it because it’s one of Those Books for me. It’s on my Those Books shelf, along with HUNGER GAMES and HATE LIST and GRACELING and the CHAOS WALKING trilogy.

Can’t wait for the discussion! Thanks for doing the book club thang.
