announcing… the FYA book club! OMG!

by Meghan on June 1, 2010

we at FYA love our readers, and while we wish we could invite everyone over to our houses and dish about jonah griggs and katniss and peeta and gale over delish snacks (mac and cheese!) and our signature cocktails (anyone up for a tiny cooper?), we can’t. at least not until we host our first FYA cocktail party convention.

BUT, we can do the next best thing, which is offer up the brand-spankin-new FYA book club RIGHT HERE ON THIS VERY BLOG! after a few fab FYA readers dropped this suggestion in our box, we decided to do the flashdance, aka take our passion and make it happen. so we hope you’ll join us! grab yr fave snacks and cocktails (pls share!) and prepare to dish about our monthly book selection.

DSC02883

because we believe in the power of democracy, we’ll be picking our books from the suggestion box. the first book, before i fall by lauren oliver, fits our initial theme of magical realism with its “dead like me”-ish samantha living her last day over and over again (it’s groundhog day!), as well as the highly scientific criteria of:

  • book none of us has read
  • a book y’all suggested
  • a book that’s been out a while (to make it easier to get yr grabby hands on)

we’ll follow up with a couple more in the theme before moving on to a new theme.

beforeIfall

each week, we’ll discuss a section of the book to stick with our policy of NO SPOILERS ALLOWED (although i know it doesn’t take an entire month to read a YA book — in fact, isn’t the ego boost and gratification of reading an ENTIRE book in 4 hours one of the beauties of YA?). of course, discussion won’t be about tone and figurative language (unless y’all want to go AP english on us, and that’s cool, too). we’re thinkin’ more like the swoonworthy scale and bff potential, as well as the best OMG!! moment in the week’s section.

so, how’s it sound? get yr cocktail shakers out and join us wednesdays in june for before i fall! maybe we can even get some cool FYA book club stickers — step back, oprah!

hooray! Book Club time!!!!

Oh man, what if the dog eats my homework/this book? You laugh but that actually happened when Zelda ate about 1/3 of that True Blood book. Which vastly improved the book, I might add.

Me too! I’ve been wanting to read this book AND I so want to be in a book club (but only with people who read cool things like YA and none of those books Oprahs always yapping about).

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, I’m so excited! This will be my first ever book club!! (wow, that actually sounds kind of sad). Can’t wait to check this book out (literally. From the library).

@meghan in re: in fact, isn’t the ego boost and gratification of reading an ENTIRE book in 4 hours one of the beauties of YA?).

YES. SO VERY TRUE. One of my favorite things about reading YA (or childrens or graphic novels) is that I can read so many and update my goodreads a ton and be like ‘omg look at me, I’m such a good reader!’ Shame.

i KNOW! my husband is always telling people how much i read, like “ooh, my wife reads a book a day” and i have to clarify or else i sound crazy.

OMFG I AM SO EXCITED! This book is awesome. Like really awesome. You know those books where you wish you could time travel just so you could go back to a time where you HADN’T read said book, and read it for the first time? That’s how good this book is.

Can I recommend a snack for this book club?

THE COUNTRY’S BEST YOGURT!

oh, and vodka.

wait, are you saying there is some FROYO ACTION IN THIS BOOK? BE STILL MY DROOLING TONGUE.

summer, i nominate you to be our Refreshments Captain. which reminds me! y’all! we need officers! i mean, this is real club, right? and what about badges? and OOOH A PLEDGE!

i’m serious! well, at least about the badges. meghan, you know you’re the Crafty Captain, right? right.

Summer June 1, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I ACCEPT! wait. is that how this works?

officers? badges? a pledge? hahahaha i love it, but I also love how this has morphed from a book club to some sort of Girl Scouts /BSC hybrid.

WHICH IS FINE BY ME!

Meghan June 1, 2010 at 4:44 pm

yes! i can be crafty captain. and haha summer — it’s totally like a bsc/girl scouts/unicorn club (holla, young jessica wakefield) hybrid. only, we won’t say “no boys allowed”.

YAY! I love being a part of a YA book club. (esp. since admin made me cancel my teen book club at the library. bittermuch.) I’ve been wanting to read this book so it will be a great excuse to push it to the front of my list.

I think all of Austin must be joining this book club! Only 2 copies available at the library!!! *Phew* reserved one just in time!

I’m so very excited about this! Also, as the anal retentive member of the group who always wants details and lists, like exactly what time to show up (when you say 7 do you MEAN 7 or is this like Austin-7 and you really mean 9?) and exactly what to wear (by casual did you mean sun-dress and strappy sandals or jeans and a cute shirt?)… uh… I need to know things, like:

1) How far do we read for the first week?
2) When should we be online for discussion?
3) What is our official club name and club slogan so that we can totally make t-shirts on cafepress?

OK. I think I’ve over-analyzed enough. YAY for book club!

haha, kristina, good questions. for next week (wednesday!), we’re reading the prologue and part one of the book. and there’s no specific discussion time right now — just look out for the book club post and dive right in whenever you get the chance!

Fantabulous! I’m totally in.

I’ve already read the book but could stand to do a bit of a re-skimming (still haven’t written my review).

Can I bring some snark? Perhaps some sass?

I know of a chat program that you embed in a post and it works fabulous. Used it for my Margaret May. Makes it uber easy to have chats for the Book Club. (pls say you aren’t gonna clog up my Twitter).

I am most definitely going to join. It sounds awesome. I have already read Before I Fall (and it is the perfect first pick) but I would love to read it again. I will avoid spoilers, I promise.

I will be breaking out the Amaretto for this one. Nothing makes me happier than Amaretto on the rocks. Or maybe Sambuca in espresso.

Sounds great! It’s been sitting on my bookshelf waiting for a reason to be opened :)
