The Frankie Landau-Banks Badass Prankster Rebel Girl Mix

by Poshdeluxe on April 28, 2010

In the land of teenager, there is no greater expression of love than a mixtape. With that in mind, we’ve decided to launch a new category in which we create musical tributes to our most adored and cherished YA characters. And who better to kick off the series than the most fearsome prankster in the whole school, FRANKIE LANDAU-BANKS!

Given that I wasn’t even able to write my review without throwing out a few songs, putting together this mix was a lot easier than, say, masterminding the Night of a Thousand Dogs. At the same time, in order to capture the awesome essence of Frankie, it had to be just the right blend of feminism, craftiness and pure badassery.

I hope this musical ode to Frankie will inspire yr inner rebel girl, whether you start a dance party in yr room or take over an all-male society. Get it here, then go START A REVOLUTION!

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY APPROVE OF THIS MIXTAPE.

Particularly because you have managed to mix En Vogue, TLC, and Destiny’s Child (my 90s icons) with Old 97s and The New Pornographers.

POSHDELUXE YOU HAVE DONE US A SERVICE!

This is totally the greatest idea ever to grace FYA! I’m so excited about it! You Don’t Own Me, YES! Le Tigre, YES! I actually completely ADORE all of these songs…well, except for U2. But DANG, great mix!

YES! this is a fantastic mixtape. and i firmly believe frankie would go old-school and actually rock a cassette for it. the offspring … dang, i’d forgotten they even existed! but what a BRILLIANT MIX.

THANK YOU EVERYONE. i’m glad y’all enjoyed it, esp. since mixtapes don’t always achieve their desired goals. i mean, anyone who’s ever been in high school has made or received at least one cringe-inducing tape of, like, every sad sap song by the cure and the smiths (in other words, 95% of their catalog). yikes.

but there’s no room for emo shizz on frankie’s tape! THIS IS MUSIC FOR WORLD DOMINATION Y’ALL.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CURE OR THE SMITHS. How are you supposed to break up with someone without listening to The Smiths and thinking, “ONLY MORRISEY KNOWS HOW I FEEL.” I do it all the time.

But, I agree, Frankie would not dig on the sadness.

of course there’s nothing wrong with making that kind of mix for YR OWN PRIVATE ENJOYMENT. but giving it to someone else? that’s where the high cringe factor comes in.

Offspring, Kim Carnes, AND Destiny’s Child?! Posh Diddy, you are The Queen of Playlists. I bow down before you.

Another thematically appropriate song, if I may: U Should Know Better by Robyn. Robyn is my heartsong.

I think EnVogue’s “Free Your Mind” is my favorite track on this mix. Well done, Posh!
