i know this blog is about young adult BOOKS, but really, how many FYAers DON’T also love teen movies? i don’t know whether it’s the midwinter slump, or the relief over finally finishing unpacking the new house or my colossal run of bad luck picking a new YA book to fall in love with, but lately i’ve been more interested in the breakfast club than a book club. from rebel without a cause elvis, to grease and heathers, to clueless to mean girls, teen movies have a respectable history and now that oscar movie season is over, it’s about time to start seeing some teen movies hitting the theaters. click to see what’s in store for 2010 …
i’ll start with the total obvs. twilight and harry potter 7.1 (not necessarily in that order in my book …)
twilight (june 30)
OMG edward’s back and he luvs me but so does jacob and now the werewolves are fighting the vampires! oh, my life sux and is so hard. i just want to be a vampire and be with edward but still have jacob be my slave forever blah blah.
official trailer’s not out, but there are some srsly awesome fan trailers (both for realz and for lolz) out there. check out this (more or less serious) one:
harry potter 7.1 (nov. 19)
umm … HARRY POTTER!! yeah, i’ll totally be watching this one.
all the rest — and some of them don’t star michael cera!!
before i start, what is the DEAL with michael cera? i mean, he’s in EVERYTHING, and he’s totally not who i picture for 99% of the dudes in books i read. he’s not a bad actor, and he’s pretty good for some parts, but jeez. not everything. so what’s the deal? is he cheap? is hollywood totally lacking in creativity? (wait … don’t answer that one.) anyway, i’ll probably go to any of these that DON’T star michael cera. just to support other actors. cos can you imagine in 20 years what’ll happen if no young actors are still out there but michael cera and rpatz? *shudder*.
in chronological order (when there’s an actual release date) …
youth in revolt (out now, michael cera alert)
michael cera plays … well, michael cera in all his other movies. that, and a michael-cera-ish tyler durden.
beastly (july 30)
neil patrick harris! an olsen twin! alex pettyfer (he was in those alex rider british movies … just trust me) based on alex flinn’s novel retelling of beauty and the beast.
it’s kind of a funny story (november)
clinically depressed craig checks himself into an adult psychiatric ward.
the lost girls (TBA)
ok, so this movie has no release date or cast, but it’s produced by breakfast club’s producer michelle manning, and based on the synopsis i found on the movie insider, it’s going to be AWESOME. based on a book by alex mcaulay called bad girls, which i must go read now.
“A group of privileged female teen troublemakers attend a reform school in the Bahamas and are sent on a nature hike, but things turn dangerous and they must fight for their lives.”
umm … reform school? the bahamas? nature hikes gone bad?? i’m so there.
if i stay (???)
directed by catherine hardwicke of twifame. mia is struggling with the choice between going to julliard to study music and staying in oregon near her hot emo-punk boyfriend, when a car accident leaves her with one choice — live or die. y’all, i’m not sure if i can handle this movie. the book was rough enough, and i’m afraid of what’ll happen in hardwicke’s hands. also, they’re talking about casting michael cera as the boyfriend. dude.is.not.hot.
emma (???)
produced by chris bender (american pie, the hangover), this is jane austen’s story retold as an INNER-CITY MUSICAL. do i need to say more?
scott pilgrim vs. the world (TBA, michael cera alert)
based on the comic book series by bryan lee o’malley. michael cera is in a garage band and has to fight his dream girl’s ex-boyfriends to win her over (i just keep thinking about garth algar and his dream woman in wayne’s world). BUT it’s directed by edgar wright (shaun of the dead, hot fuzz)

My god! What is with the Michael Cera overload? Listen, Michael Cera: the only movie I want to see with your name in the billing is Arrested Development: The Movie. Rated R for a Les Cousins Dangereux scene.
I think we should add YA movie reviews occassionally. Like “How To Deal” – crappy, despite the fact that Mandy Moore was in it.
Okay, so I’m excited for at least some of these movies, but not being a 15-year old girl, like Erin, the only time I want to see George Michael Bluth is when he’s surrounded by the rest of the family.
Yeah, I’m not getting the Cera overload either. He’s just so plain. Is that the attraction?? *shrug*
But I will take an overload of Alex Pettyfer any day. The boy is hotness. I read the Mortal Instruments series a while back and now when I look at Pettyfer all I see is Jace. Could there be a better Jace? I just don’t think so.
my god, you are SO RIGHT on pettyfer as jace! oh, man.
and i’m all about reviewing movies, too, especially those based on books. too bad mandy moore’s not in any of these movies coming out!
i think we (jenny) also cast pettyfer as peeta so… HUNGER GAMES MOVIE WHERE ARE YOU?
“youth in revolt” is actually supposed to be hilarious, and i’m seeing it this weekend, so i’ll let y’all know.
i cannot WAIT for “it’s kind of a funny story,” esp. cos zach galifinawhatever is gonna be in it!
p.s. I HADN’T SEEN THAT HARRY POTTER TRAILER YET AND I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK.
okay, I need to focus on Pettyfer as my image for Peeta. I never really had a concrete image of him in my head and then my hubby really went and messed me up by calling Peeta the “fat boy”. seriously, I didn’t know which character he was talking about. I was all “Who? Who????” And then he said “Katniss’s friend, you know the baker’s son. The dough boy.” *sigh* Hubby thinks of him as fat because his family had a bakery. I tried to argue with him that the author NEVER described him as such and even went so far as to point out that even the “wealthier” merchants were actually poor and deprived, the entire district was poor and borderline starving. But he still thinks he’s Dough Boy. Oh…and that he should have died at the end of book 2.
I revoked his right to read book 3 since he clearly had no respect for Peeta.
say WHAT JILL?!!!!
i think hating on peeta is a guy thing. you’ll see what i mean when we post our first “boy’s POV” entry…
Guys can’t handle Peeta because they have realized that he’s too much to try to live up to.
Or at least that’s how my argument is shaping up.
what?!?? i think you’re totally right, erin. they’re totally just jealous. i think they go for gale because he’s the man’s man. plus, i think they want gale to get katniss without ever actually SAYING or DOING anything that means he lurvs her like THAT, not just as a cute little kid he teaches to hunt or his kid sister or something. makes their lives easier.
ps thanks posh for fixing the post to include the trailers!!!
Okay I just watched that trailer for Eclipse, and can I just ask? What’s with every homemade trailer using the Requiem for a Dream theme song? (actually, even legitimate trailers do, I’m looking at you LOTR) I like the song too but are there no other dramatic musical scores out there? What is Jason Segal’s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall doing with his Casio these days?
Regardless, that reminds me that one time I came up with words to that song. They go like this:
You guys! There’s a movie!
Really Exciting!
You can tell by
all the vi-ol-ins
You guys! See my movie!
Dramatic edits!
Close up shots
of very pretty men
You guys! In my movie!
Some explosions!
Fast chases in su-
per fancy cars
See it! See my movie!
I guarantee
there’ll be at least
one WB star
That’s as far as I got with it.
Oh man, Erin, you’re my hero.
You guys, I think you’re right about the Peeta thing, and that makes me v. v. sad.
I was so surprised at hubby’s view of Peeta. I can tell though that there is no changing his mind. Must be the Manly Man thing. Broke my heart though when he said Peeta should’ve died. That was a low blow and wrong on some many levels…even the literary one.
Can’t wait for the first man’s PoV entry!
She does kind of describe Peeta as “doughy” or something like that. Or beefy–some word that makes me think of him as sort solid, not fat or anything.
It’s so nice to find that other people are as annoyed with Michael Cera as I am! But Youth in Revolt does look funny, I’ll definitely rent it (unless Posh says it’s terrible).
Erin, your song is amazing.
p.s. OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO SAY THIS!! That’s the first time I’ve seen that HP sneak, too, and I just about died. Matt’s re-reading the Deathly Hallows right now, and I just read some of it to him on our recent car trip to Kerrville, and the sneak made me so excited!!! Since they’re splitting it into two, I’m hoping they won’t have to leave ANYTHING out.
Michael Cera = George Michael Bluth. I haven’t seen him in anything else and don’t want to. You’re right; he is SO not hot.
I still haven’t seen the Eclipse trailer; I work at a high school and can’t watch stuff like that at work. The Teachers Are Reading club introduced me to Twilight 1.5 years ago; I’d never even heard of it OR the movie and couldn’t have cared less.
Until.
I’m now totally and irrevocably in love with the series and the movies. And RPatz. I’m 57. My husband hates the whole Twilight thing and was upset that I bought my very own little PocketEdward to carry around on adventures. Why, just this weekend, PocketEdward finally found his nuts at the base of one of our coconut palms.
But I digress.
Twilight led me to explore other YA novels. I’ve discovered so many that I love.
rita, so glad twilight led you to other YA novels! you’re right – there’s SO MUCH out there that’s amazing.
I’m going to miss the easy access to these novels. I’m retiring in June and moving to Big Pine Key in Florida. (tough life) I just checked out the dead and the gone by Susan Beth Pfiffer to take with me on spring break. I loved Life As We Knew It.
public library, rita! almost as easy as picking them up at work, and free!
I know, and I’ll take advantage of the library, already have a Monroe Co. library card. It’s just so convenient to walk down the hall! I check them out online and the library secretary walks them up to me if I don’t go right away.
Yeah. I’m spoiled!
I want a Kindle, but I love holding and owning the books themselves.
