for 2010, katniss resolves to finally get a freaking clue about boys.

WHAT UP Y’ALL IT’S A BRAND NEW YEAR!

and, as you know, with every new year comes resolutions to improve ourselves. or, if you happen to write for a YA blog, resolutions for fictional characters! cos hello, it is way easier to demand things of other people than it is of yrself (esp. when the “other people” actually don’t exist in real life. except for peeta. PEETA IS REAL).

here at FYA headquarters, we decided to create new year’s resolutions for some of our favorite characters from teen literature! like most resolutions, some of these characters may never achieve their our goals. but that’s ok, we’ll continue loving them anyway, just like our real friends when they ultimately break their resolution to stop drinking so much and consequently revert back to their former fun selves and everything goes back to being awesome.

ANYWAY! even if our resolutions don’t pan out, i have the feeling that 2010 is gonna be a a fabulous year for YA books. my omen?

FROM POSHDELUXE:

mary (from “forest of hands and teeth”) resolves to either get way more interesting or just let herself get bitten by zombies already!!!!

cameron quick (from “sweethearts”) resolves to COME BACK. PLEASE COME BACK CAMERON. I LOVE YOU.

frankie landau banks (from her own “disreputable history”) resolves to expand her guerilla prank warfare over the entire campus of alabaster prep and to enlist alpha dog as her partner in crime (and in lurve WOO WOO!).

ruby oliver (from “the boyfriend book” series) resolves to attend more heavy metal concerts with hutch and GET WITH NOEL ALREADY.

rose (from the “vampire academy” series) resolves to deal with dimitri, once and for all (i’ll just leave it at that, to avoid spoilers. but if you’ve read it, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN).

grace (from “shiver”) resolves to start being obsessed with dolphins instead of wolves cos dolphin t-shirts are SO 2010!!!!!!

andromeda klein (from her own book) resolves to start her own magic bookstore (what up willow!) in order to preserve important books. and byron will be her first employee so they can take (makeout) breaks together.

FROM ERIN:

Katniss should resolve to marry Peeta for realsies and become his official taste-tester at his new, post-Rebellion, bakery.

Liesel (from The Book Thief) should resolve to move to the States and become a librarian.  This way she doesn’t have to steal books anymore. It’s called borrowing when it’s from the library.

Cameron (from Going Bovine) should resolve not to be dead anymore.

FROM JENNY:

The girl in “Wings” will resolve to eat a burger and not be boring (See I can’t even remember her name! But I do remember Tam, played by Tom Sturridge. Who is resolving to stay hot).

Katniss will resolve to become the leader she symbolizes, and she will make a choice, for Peeta or Gale. One way or the other.

FROM MEGHAN:

em watts (from the “airhead” series) will resolve to stop letting things interrupt her hot makeouts with christopher! and to stop stark enterprises and save the world!

katsa (from “graceling”) will resolve to spend some quality time with po more often while out training young girls to kick ass.

mara valentine (from “vegan virgin valentine”) will resolve to eat a grilled cheese sandwich every day (dude, i think i’m going to resolve to do that, too!).

edward cullen resolves to be less stalkerish and boring.

katniss resolves to embrace the mockingjay and lead the revolt!

2009 YA ROUND-UP LINKS

the ya ya yas blog posted the 2009 cybil award YA finalists, and i’m pleased to note that “how to say good-bye in robot” is one of them. i am, however, appalled that “north of beautiful” also made the list, since i couldn’t even bring myself to finish that book in order to slam it in a review (THAT’s how much i disliked it). and hey look jenny, it’s yr fave book, “wintergirls”! ha ha… oh man.

story siren posted her top YA picks of 2009, and wait… WHAT? kristi, you liked “north of beautiful” too?! ok, that’s it. i’m officially a grumpy old hater.

adele over at persnickety snark lists her top 5 YA bloggers of the year. i’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that FYA wasn’t eligible since we only got started this summer. NEXT YEAR SUCKAS.

check the finalists for the william c. morris YA debut awards. i have read approximately… none of them! looks like i found another resolution for 2010.

also on persnickety snark, an extremely articulate, air-tight defense of gale. i’m still hot for peeta but i gotta say, her argument is persuasive. as are my fantasies of gale’s arm muscles.
