catching fire (nostradamus says…)

So I know none of us have actually come down from reading Suzanne Collins latest installment of the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, but we at FYA have to ask, WHAT NEXT???!!!

I’ll tell you some of my ideas, and then here on the party line, all y’all can voice yours!

So after reading HG, I had NO IDEA where Suzanne Collins was going to take us with CF.  And I can honestly say, whatever I thought she might do, I NEVER SAW what she DID DO coming!  Holy blow my mind! I can’t tell you how many questions this book left me with!  Well, actually, I CAN tell you, so here goes…

Peeta, Gale, Peeta,Gale…. Which one will Kat choose?  Or will Ms. Collins pull a “back to the games” scale shocker and have her not end up with either of them???  Horror!  So, hypothesis #1 comes from my husband:  If there had never been a hunger games, Kat and Gale would have ended up together. It would have been the natural progression of their lives.  However, the games DID happen, and in that arena, Kat was changed forever.  Anything her life MIGHT have been, if it weren’t for the games, is gone.  Peeta, who has shared this experience with her, is the only other person (apart from Haymitch, and eww.) who could help her move forward with her life.  Hypothesis #2: Gale dies.  It would break my heart.  But what if he sacrifices himself to save Peeta?  Hypothesis #3: The Capitol brainwashes Peeta, and he becomes the enemy.  Don’t hurt me!  I don’t like this either, I’m just trying to prepare myself in case the worst happens.  Please, tell me your theories!

Moving on… As Erin commented yesterday, it was pretty obvious early on that Kat was being manipulated and controlled by not just the Capitol, but also Haymitch, and at least to some extent, Peeta.  She became the symbol that started a revolution, only, nobody actually told her.  They didn’t trust her to actually BE the symbol, and by the end of the book, it seemed to me that Kat was pretty pissed about it!  So what happens next?  I think our girl might just make them regret going behind her back.  But will she be reckless?  (Please, Suzanne Collins, don’t go the silly-girl-goes-off-on-her-own-and has-to-be-rescued route!!!) That said, will she go off on her own to rescue Peeta?  Or will she decide to work with them despite the fact that they all used her without letting her in on the plan?  And since we’re talking about this, are Haymitch and the other leaders of the rebel forces really any better than the President and the Capitol, since they’re so willing to use Kat to their own ends?

Is District 12 really no more?  What about District 13?  I think we will at least get to visit District 13 in the next installment.  Maybe it will even be the rebel forces HQ?

Is Cinna alive???!!! Oh, please, PLEASE, PLEEAASE let dear brave Cinna be okay… Here’s what I HOPE happens on that front:  Darius rallies all the Avoxes to spring Cinna, Peeta and Johanna.  The Capitol is in an uproar, so they make it out and join the rest of the rebels in District 13!

Party line, take it away!

jenny, are you TRYING to give me a heart attack?!!!! GOOD GRIEF. yr hypotheses #2 & #3 about peeta vs. gale practically made me BREAK OUT IN HIVES. with that said, you’re probably right… peeta will get brainwashed, and gale will die trying to save him. GAH! i can’t even look at those words i just typed!

although killing gale, in some ways, would be the easy way out, and it seems like collins prefers more challenging routes. but i can’t think of another theory cos i’m still suffering heart palpitations.

i’m really hoping that district 13 is like endor in return of the jedi, with tons of rebel forces hiding out and using crude (but awesome!) technology to prepare for war. except minus the ewoks.

i REALLY like the avox uprising theory, though. that’s a great idea, jenny.

and YES can katniss PLEASE take control of herself and her situation (but without falling into the damsel-in-distress trap, as pointed out by jenny)?!! maybe she will head up the rescue mission with gale and then prim will be a stowaway and turn out to be a total badass when the shizz hits the fan. and then there will be a huge showdown and cinna and peeta will be SAVED and then katniss will realize that she truly loves peeta and OMG!!!

here’s one prediction that is 100% accurate: i am so gonna cry.

If Cinna dies, I’m walking. I mean it, Collins! Don’t test me!

Oh man, oh man, I don’t want Gale or Peeta to die. And I’m not sure who Kat should choose. I have really started to rethink my beliefs about polyamory after reading CF, I am not even kidding. Can’t she have both? They could all live in Victor’s Village together! Peeta could do the cooking and Gale could to the gathering and Kat could do the hunting! Maybe? No?

Sigh. I just love Peeta too much to see him hurt. So whatever makes him happy! That’s what I want! (I could make you happy, Peeta.)

I think the fact that I care at all is 100% proof of Collins’ amazingness, because I hatehatehate love triangles. Usually both options suck, and unfortunately for us all, Kelly Taylor ruined the “I Choose Me” option back on Bev Niners.

Okay, romance aside – I really really really hope that Kat actually BECOMES the leader and the symbol that she’s been forced to be. She’s spent her life stepping up because she has to; she needs now to step up because she wants to.

Oh, one other thing- If Peeta dies, I am not entirely sure I’ll recover.

Based on Collins’ other series-The Overlander Chronicles-I am not expecting everything to end hunky dory where everything gets tied off neatly. Though I can’t bring the exact ending of the last Gregor book to mind, I remember finishing it and thinking that it was a heavy dose of reality delivered in allegorical form.

So I’m going to go with having no expectations since clearly this author totally knows how to BLOW ALL OF OUR MINDS!
